Town Story:

The Town of Levan was founded in 1868. Apostle Erastus Snow was on his way to Salt Lake City to conference when he stopped by and chose a tract of land lying between Pigeon and Chicken Creek Canyons about 1/2 mile west of the mountains.

There has been several versions as to where the name Levan came from and what meaning it had. The one we go by is that Levan means "Navel" spelled backwards since Levan is very near the center of the state of Utah. It is also suppose to mean "Robbers Roost" or a "Den of Thieves" in Danish. Levan has had a few outlaws and books about our outlaws such as "The Outlaw Trail" by Charles Kiley, "Last of the Bandit Riders" by Matt Warner, and "History of Tom McCarty" by Tom McCarty.

Levan owns and operates it's own electrical system, water system, natural gas system, and cable T.V. We have two hydro electric plants, and is a member of Utah Municipal Power Agency.

The population of Levan is about 710 people. We have experienced some growth the last several years but we are still a small rural community. We live 94 miles south of Salt Lake City, and 50 miles south of Provo. A lot of people commute to work but feel that the small community life is worth it.

We live close to the mountains where you can enjoy many outdoor activities. To the southwest is Yuba Lake where you can enjoy recreational facilities and fishing.
